Sustainable impact
Since that appeal last winter, the situation in Ukraine has not improved—quite the contrary. The news reaching us from the east, and from Kharkiv in particular, is deeply concerning. This time, we have distributed the donations over a longer period and through our local contacts to the best of our knowledge and belief:
Through our partner Yuliia Siedaia, we were able to fund the repair of a vehicle in the Rohan municipality near Kharkiv. The vehicle is used to fix damaged power lines, helping to maintain essential infrastructure. Maria Chernenko, head of the local military-civil administration, ensured that the donation was put to this sustainable use.
A different kind of donation went to the women's shelter in Vasylkiv. Under the leadership of Mayor Natalya Balasynovich, who is deeply committed to gender equality, one of Ukraine's first facilities for women affected by violence was opened there. We know the mayor through the project "She can". Natalya Balasynovich also attended this year's "Café Kyiv" in Berlin this February, where she gave an impressive account of her work on our panel.
We once again supported the women's organization "Diya" in Odesa, whose president, Natalya Deliyeva, we have been in close contact with since 2021. Natalya used the funds to purchase items including medication and painkillers for a hospital, which were used to provide immediate care for soldiers who had undergone amputations. Furthermore, we supported a home for women with disabilities in Mykolaiv, which is located on the southern frontline. Among other things, the funds were used to purchase a washing machine.
Finally, a smaller donation was sent to the Kirovohrad region. Nadiia Kolenchenko, regional representative of the "Ukrainian Women's Congress" platform, is active there, supporting internally displaced persons. The money was used to buy sportswear for young people at Christmas. As a lovely gesture, a small German flag was sewn into the sweaters.
All our partners and their organizations send their sincere thanks. We hear time and again how important it is that we—ordinary citizens in Germany—continue to think of and support the people in Ukraine.
