Strengthening democratic values in the workplace: EAF Berlin supports companies nationwide

Democracy thrives on participation—even in the workplace
Democratic processes in everyday work life—such as transparent decision-making and fair participation—create the foundation for employees to feel equal and respected. When staff feel heard and taken seriously, it creates a work climate that fosters participation and trust. These experiences extend beyond the workplace: those who experience democracy at work carry democratic attitudes into other areas of life. The workplace is therefore a vital space for conveying democratic values, promoting equality, and embracing diversity. To this end, the project works with workplace "democracy guides" to shape a strong and fair environment in each participating company.
Pilot projects to promote democratic competence
The project "Democracy and Equality in the Workplace" aims to promote democratic competence—for and with employees on the ground. Together with 13 companies from across Germany, the project team is developing ways to strengthen democratic values in daily work life. The democracy guides from these companies—which range from the technical and industrial sectors to public services such as hospitals and state-owned enterprises—work through various modules on topics like mindset, collegial cooperation, and values-based leadership. The various stakeholder groups in the participating companies are actively involved and benefit from new insights for their internal spheres of influence. In addition to training and pilot projects within the companies, the project promotes exchange with other businesses, industry representatives, and relevant social partners.
Equality and diversity are prerequisites for living democracy
Equality and diversity are not just goals, but also prerequisites for a living democracy in the workplace. When diverse perspectives are represented and equal opportunities are guaranteed in decision-making processes, it strengthens the democratic culture and social cohesion within the company. Conversely, democratic structures promote equality by enabling participation and countering discrimination.
Funding
The project "Democracy and Equality in the Workplace" is funded as part of the program "Shaping the Transformation of Work through Social Partnership" by the Federal Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs and the European Social Fund .
