Since 2012, EAF Berlin has been active in Tunisia, supporting democratization with the project “Democracy Needs Women”. The project supported the political participation of women, especially at the municipal level, through networking, exchange and measures to promote dialogue.
The goals of the project are:
- Exchange: Promoting Tunisian-German exchange of experience and knowledge about women’s political and social participation.
- Empowerment: Supporting, qualifying and accompanying potential female candidates for regional and municipal elections.
- Networking: Dissemination of good examples and promotion of dialogue between the NGOs involved, but also at the regional level between local protagonists from civil society, politics and administration.
“Democracy Needs Women” was created within the framework of the Tunisian-German Transformation Partnership and was funded by the German Federal Foreign Office and the German Federal Ministry for Family Affairs, Senior Citizens, Women and Youth from 2012 to 2014. From 2015 to 2016 (the project’s third phase), the project was commissioned by the “Initiative for Municipal Development” of the CoMun program (Municipal Development and Local Democracy in the Maghreb) of the Deutsche Gesellschaft für internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) with funding from the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ).
