The Alliance "Together Against Sexism"

The signatory organizations have a common goal: a society without sexism and sexualized violence

A society in which sexism and sexualized violence have no place - that is the goal of all those involved in the alliance "Together against sexism". More than 550 organizations, companies and institutions have already signed the "Joint Declaration against Sexism and Sexual Harassment" and form the cross-industry network. The alliance will continue to grow in order to bring about far-reaching structural change.

Sexism is deeply rooted in our society, which has serious consequences: In addition to gender-based discrimination and inequality of opportunities, it provides a breeding ground for sexualized harassment and violence. In the coalition agreement of the 24th Federal Government, the coalition partners declare: "We want a strong alliance against sexism". The foundation began their work in 2020/2021 with the EAF project "Dialogue forums against sexism" and subsequent continued with the declaration "Together against sexism and sexual harassment".

Exchange and networking

All alliance members regularly have the opportunity to take part in network meetings on topics relevant to the discourse. These events are an opportunity to share experiences, concrete measures against sexism and knowledge from different sectors in order to foster an intersectional and deeper understanding of sexism. The alliance "Together against sexism" is intended to act not only as a knowledge repository, but also as a think tank. New knowledge and data is created through our own surveys with alliance members.
Simultaneously, publications and various social media channels are used to disseminate knowledge in larger social contexts by presenting debates and content that is accessible and comprehensive. Public events, such as the specialist conference on sexism planned for May 2024, also open up the framework and participation in the overall social project through workshops, discussions and international participants from various areas of anti-sexist work, politics and culture.

The alliance “Together Against Sexism” has three main areas of focus:

  1. Sexism in the workplace

Sexism in the workplace manifests itself in many different ways. Sexist remarks and comments, sexual harassment and assaults, but also unequal performance evaluation of men and women, unequal pay or a lack of opportunities to balance work and family life are all consequences. Sexual harassment as the visible tip of the iceberg of a work culture characterized by sexism has serious consequences for those affected - but also damages the organization as such.

  2. Sexism in the public space

According to the results of a study by Prof. Dr. Wippermann, public spaces and public transport are a common place for sexism. This manifests itself in physical and verbal assaults, but also in sexist advertising on billboards and on vehicles as well as in urban planning that is not equally accessible to all people. The consequences can be the loss of a sense of security as well as fear. Among other things, this leads to women in particular restricting their freedom of movement by avoiding places such as bus stops or even avoidung using public transport completely.

  3. Sexism in culture and the media

Since 2017, sexualized assaults and the structures making them possible have been publicized and scandalized worldwide under the hashtag #metoo. They became the triggers for a global movement that brought the issue of sexualized violence and abuse of power to people's attention. However, sexism in culture and the media also manifests itself in other ways: The stereotypical and sexist portrayal of women, the absence of women on stages and screens, age discrimination, the lack of female leaders in private and publicly funded institutions and companies, and the gender pay gap in the cultural sector.
