With the Helene Weber Award – named after one of the four pioneering women who helped draft Germany’s post-war constitution – the Federal Ministry for Family Affairs, Senior Citizens, Women and Youth awards a prize for outstanding achievements by women in local politics. It’s aimed at women who have been involved in local politics on a voluntary basis for either one or two legislative periods. The prize was announced on the occasion of the 60th anniversary of the passing of the Basic Law and has been awarded four times so far – in 2009, 2011, 2015 and 2020 – by the Federal Minister for Family Affairs. The EAF Berlin is responsible for announcing and organizing the award as well as supporting the activities of those women who accept it. The award winners receive individual coaching as well as our support for their local activities.

Members of the German parliament draw up a shortlist of nominees and a jury then selects the winner. The network of award-winners has now grown to 65 women. They come from all parts of Germany, from different generations and political parties. The self-organized network of award-winners is represented by an elected spokesperson and forms an important part of the Helene Weber-College. Numerous award-winners have made themselves available, for example as mentors, to encourage more women to participate in politics at the local level.
