A mentoring program for more diversity in politics!
With a digital launch event, EAF Berlin has kicked off the second round of the nationwide mentoring program "My Background? I Want to Be in the Foreground" for women with a migration background, as part of the Helene Weber Kolleg (HWK).
At the launch event in October, Dr. Deniz Nergiz, Managing Director of the Federal Immigration and Integration Council (BZI), spoke about the opportunities and challenges for migrant women in local and national politics. To help shape the coming months, participants were provided with a "toolkit" containing information on individual goals within the mentoring program, the roles and responsibilities of mentees and mentors, and the reflection and feedback phase. Until the end of March, the women will be supported by their mentors on their path to becoming elected officials, with additional online seminars on topics such as self-marketing and navigating power dynamics. The program concludes with the development of policy recommendations to promote greater representation of women with migration backgrounds in politics.
Fourteen tandems are participating in the second round of the diversity mentoring program. Key goals of the program include the exchange of knowledge and experience between mentors and mentees, as well as increasing the networking and visibility of women with migration backgrounds. Despite their different party affiliations, everyone agrees: there is a need for more women with migration backgrounds to serve as elected representatives in parliaments at all political levels.
