Women POWER Berlin!

Commissioned by the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung, this study analyzes the political participation of women in the state of Berlin.

Berlin's political landscape is shifting. In 2021, more top-level positions in the Senate are held by women than by men. With Franziska Giffey as Governing Mayor, the state government is also led by a woman. However, the picture in the Berlin House of Representatives is changing only slowly, and the candidate lists of the individual parties differ significantly.
Commissioned by the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung, the EAF has conducted a detailed analysis of these structures. It is intended to provide impetus for the debate on a parity law in Berlin and to outline recommendations and paths for action for women.

Key findings of the study

  • Progress in the representation of women in Senate leadership positions
  • The Berlin House of Representatives: Progress at a snail's pace
  • Significant differences between party candidate lists – CDU in last place
  • Constituencies: Women are nominated less frequently and for less promising positions
  • District and state lists: Lower chances of election for women
  • Good starting position in the district assemblies

From Elected to Threatened

The EAF Berlin study “From Elected to Threatened: Experiences of Female Members of the German Bundestag Regarding Violence against Women in Politics ” surveyed current and former members of the Bundestag and highlights how hate, incitement, and gender-based violence influence political work. It becomes clear that these attacks do not merely target individual female politicians; they endanger political participation and, consequently, democratic representation. The study was produced as part of the European project “3R—Recognize, Resist, Rise Up: Tackling Gender-Based Violence against Women in Politics.”

Sexismus am Arbeitsplatz

Die Studie liefert erstmals repräsentative, branchenübergreifende Daten zu Ausmaß, Erscheinungsformen und Folgen von Sexismus am Arbeitsplatz in Deutschland. Methodisch basiert sie auf einem Mixed-Methods-Ansatz, der quantitative Befragungsdaten mit qualitativen Tagebuchaufzeichnungen kombiniert. Durchgeführt wurde die Untersuchung von der EAF Berlin im Rahmen des vom Bundesministerium für Bildung, Familie, Senioren, Frauen und Jugend geförderten Projekts Bündnis „Gemeinsam gegen Sexismus“. Berücksichtigt wurden dabei neben Frauen und Männern ausdrücklich auch trans, inter und nicht-binäre Personen. Auf Grundlage der Studienergebnisse wurden konkrete Handlungsempfehlungen abgeleitet, wie staatliche Verantwortung, rechtliche Rahmenbedingungen und betriebliche Praxis stärker miteinander verzahnt werden können.
