Four times a year, EAF-Berlin sends out the “Diversity & Leadership” update. It includes relevant news and studies on the topics of diversity and leadership, as well as an in-depth feature on a specific topic. The current issue focuses on “Corporate Political Responsibility.” The “Diversity & Leadership” update is made possible by our corporate partners.
Companies have always been important actors in society. They are part of our communities, often deeply rooted in their regions, and frequently among the largest employers in an area. They employ many people with very different backgrounds, perspectives, and lived experiences. This has always been the case. And for just as long, there has been the idea that companies should take responsibility – after all, Corporate Social Responsibility is not a new concept. But what about political responsibility? Should companies also take political positions? Or do different rules apply here – neutrality, economic considerations, the laws of the market? For a long time, companies – and CEOs in particular – were rather cautious on this issue. But that has changed. Since the European elections, at the latest, we have seen more and more companies publicly taking a stand. Not in a party-political sense, but based on values. Because neutrality reaches its limits when the foundations of our free democratic order are called into question.
And for many, a great deal is at stake: protectionist and isolationist tendencies threaten open markets and, with them, economic success. Rising racism and xenophobia make it more difficult to attract and retain international talent. But this is about more than economic interests. It is about how we live together – and about cohesion in the workplace. When people no longer feel that they belong or when conflicts within teams increase, everyone is affected. Conversely, we know how much can be achieved when trust exists and people work well together. A strong sense of togetherness not only improves collaboration, but also strengthens each individual. Companies that stand up for democracy and the values enshrined in the German constitution are not abandoning neutrality – they are defending the foundations of our shared society.
