This practical guide presents the findings of the qualitative and quantitative research conducted for the Flexship project, "Flexible Working Models for Executives," a joint initiative by EAF Berlin and the Berlin School of Economics and Law.

Full-time work, overtime, and the expectation of physical presence remain synonymous with the path to leadership. Even in the era of Work 4.0 and New Work, little has changed in Germany in this regard. Executives fear that utilizing flexible working models will hinder their careers, and they often cite a lack of role models and concrete support from top management or direct supervisors. A cultural shift is still needed. Only when flexible working models become the norm for executives will the attitudes and expectations surrounding leadership roles truly evolve.

So, where is Leadership 4.0? What are the success factors for innovative working models in business and academia? What barriers must be overcome? The research project "Flexship: Flexible Working Models for Executives" provides answers in its practical guide, "Flexible Working in Leadership."

The guide outlines available models and how they can be implemented. It offers concrete recommendations for their introduction and highlights compelling reasons why investing in flexible working models is worthwhile for companies. Executives from the project's industry partners—DIW and Deutsche Telekom—share their experiences in the guide and are available for interviews.

About the project:

The project was realized in collaboration with industry partners: Deutsche Bahn, Deutsche Post DHL Group, Deutsche Telekom, the Leibniz Association, the Max Planck Society, and the executive association United Leaders Association (ULA).

This research-to-practice project was funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research.
