Active Bystanding: Acting safely in cases of discrimination and boundary violations
Active Bystanding: Acting safely in cases of discrimination and boundary violations
Training for employees, managers, and teams to strengthen responsibility, civic courage, and respectful collaboration.

Discrimination and sexualized violence occur in many organizations – in companies, administrations, educational institutions, and associations. Employees often experience or observe boundary-crossing situations and don't know how to react appropriately. Such situations are not always clear-cut – they often exist in grey areas or are part of ingrained behaviors in daily work. This is precisely where Active Bystanding comes in: The approach empowers people to act safely and appropriately for the situation. In our training sessions, participants learn concrete intervention strategies and strengthen a respectful organizational and team culture.
Your Benefits

Confidence in acting in difficult situations
Participants learn to better assess discriminatory situations and react appropriately. This creates more confidence in handling difficult situations in daily work, within the team, or in leadership roles.

Practical strategies
Concrete intervention strategies are practiced using typical everyday work situations. These include direct address, distraction, organizing support, or aftercare. This builds more confidence in dealing with discriminatory situations.

Sustainably strengthen work and team culture
Research shows that when discriminatory behavior is addressed, workplace norms change for the better. Active Bystanding helps organizations strengthen responsibility within the team and foster a work culture where boundaries are respected and those affected are not left alone.
Discrimination and sexual harassment occur in many organizations – in companies, administrations, educational institutions, and associations. Employees often experience or observe boundary-crossing behavior and don't know how to react appropriately. Such situations are not always clear-cut; they exist in grey areas or are so normalized that many don't notice them. Uncertainty, conflicts of loyalty, fear of consequences, or lack of knowledge often lead to situations going unchallenged – and those affected being left alone with their experiences.
This is precisely where Active Bystanding comes in. The approach empowers people not to ignore discriminatory behavior, but to act safely and appropriately for the situation – even when they are not directly affected themselves.
Making a difference: As an Active Bystander
- Active Bystanding empowers people to remain capable of acting in discriminatory or boundary-crossing situations – even when they are not directly affected themselves. At its core is the conscious decision to take responsibility and act in solidarity.

- Active Bystanders intervene when they observe discrimination, set boundaries, and thereby make it clear that discriminatory behavior has no place in organizations. Their actions impact both the person committing the act and the entire environment.
- Active Bystanding does not mean putting oneself in danger or thoughtlessly breaking hierarchies. The approach provides safe, situation-appropriate courses of action. These include distracting from a situation, direct address, involving other individuals or responsible authorities, supporting the affected person after the situation, and documenting incidents. Which strategy is chosen depends on the context and one's own scope of action.
Learn and practice: Testing practical action competence
Our formats blend theoretical understanding with practical application. Participants work with typical situations from their daily work, reflect on dynamics of discrimination, and develop concrete strategies for their specific context.
We take into account diverse perspectives and experiences of discrimination – such as those related to gender, origin, sexual identity, age, disability, or social status.
Active Bystanding helps organizations foster respectful interactions in the workplace. When discriminatory behavior is not ignored, it leads to clearer boundaries, greater team accountability, and a more supportive work culture.
