Prof. Dr. Barbara Schaeffer-Hegel

Prof. Dr. Barbara Schaeffer-Hegel is the founder of EAF Berlin and was Chairman of the Board from 1996 to 2009. She is also the founder of Femtec.GmbH.

 

Barbara Schaeffer-Hegel, born in 1936, studied political science, history, philosophy and romance studies. She has taught at universities in Bonn, Münster, Vienna, Innsbruck and San Diego. From 1980 until 2002 she has held a professorship in education at the Technical University of Berlin.

Barbara Schaeffer-Hegel has published numerous works on issues relating to civic education and on feminism-oriented social research, conducting a variety of research projects in these fields. Since the 1990s, she has been particularly concerned with the lack of women in political and social leadership positions and has led several studies on this issue.

In 1994, Barbara Schaeffer-Hegel and Dr. Helga Lukoschat were together in a group of women who promoted the candidacy of Dr. Hildegard Hamm-Brücher for the presidency of the Federal Republic of Germany, launching a nationwide campaign to elect her.

After the election of the Federal President, she founded the EAF (the European Academy for Women in Politics and Business) in 1996, with the goal of promoting the next generation of female leaders and fostering more family- and child-friendly societies.

Barbara Schaeffer-Hegel has been awarded the Federal Cross of Merit (1st Class) for her services to gender equality.

Barbara Schaeffer-Hegel is married, has four children and six grandchildren.
