Presentation of the 2020 Helene Weber Award

The award ceremony took place at the Bolle Festsäle in Alt-Moabit during a formal certificate presentation. The winners are committed to supporting the next generation of local politicians and promoting diversity in local government, serving as role models for potential female candidates. The goal of the award is to strengthen local politics as the "foundation of democracy" and to encourage more women to run for local office.

Federal Minister for Women's Affairs Franziska Giffey emphasized: "Politics is not a 'man's job.' It concerns us all. It is time for more women to get involved in politics, not just at the federal level and in major cities, but also in small municipalities and rural regions. Local politics, in particular, is an area where women can make a real difference. This is not only important for a better society, but it can also be very rewarding. Through the Helene Weber Kolleg and the Helene Weber Award, we are providing concrete support for women in politics. The winners will encourage other women to follow their lead and get involved. However, political parties also have a role to play here. They must work even harder to recruit women for political office and support them in finding the time for political work alongside their many other commitments."

The Helene Weber Award is being presented for the fourth time, with a total of 65 winners to date. The award is a pillar of the Helene Weber Kolleg, which was initiated as the first nationwide, cross-party platform for women involved in local politics.

The Helene Weber Award and Kolleg are funded by the Federal Ministry for Family Affairs, Senior Citizens, Women and Youth. The project is managed by EAF Berlin.

Violence against female politicians in Germany: extent, forms, and recommendations

Politicians are increasingly becoming targets of attacks. Women in politics are particularly affected—often with sexist or discriminatory motives. The consequences are severe: some are withdrawing from political engagement. A new analysis by EAF Berlin describes the forms and extent of gender-based violence against female politicians and derives concrete recommendations for political actors. For the first time, the analysis captures the status quo of various forms of violence against women in politics and identifies areas for action for parliaments and parties, as well as legal gaps and support mechanisms for those affected. It was produced as part of the EU-funded project "3R – Recognize, Resist, Rise Up."

Too Different for Power? - How Courageous Women Fight for Equality in Politics

Gender equality in politics is stagnating. Too few women enter politics or participate in decision-making processes. Deterrents include communication styles, digital harassment, sexism, cutthroat mentalities, opaque appointment processes, intersectional discrimination, and the lack of compatibility between holding office and caregiving responsibilities. In this anthology, female officeholders and committed women analyze these problems and share their experiences. The authors formulate a political agenda for greater equality and show how things can be done differently.

Study: Women's involvement in local politics in Saxony

Whether in the state parliament or local councils, Saxony ranks among the lowest in Germany when it comes to the representation of women in politics. The reasons for the low proportion of women in parliaments are multifaceted: the rise of anti-democratic and right-wing extremist positions is perceived as threatening, particularly in rural areas. In local councils, women frequently encounter sexism and established male networks, while also facing challenging conditions regarding the balance between work, family, and private life.

Meeting of female mayors from Germany, Austria, and Switzerland

Female mayors from Germany, Austria, and Switzerland face the same challenges: between 10 and 15 percent of all mayoral positions in these three countries are held by women. Together, the German Association of Towns and Municipalities, the Austrian Association of Municipalities, the Swiss Association of Municipalities, and EAF Berlin aim to identify what is needed to increase the proportion of women in local politics.

With Children in Politics - Good practices for balancing family, career, and local political volunteer work

Local councils and town halls remain a male-dominated domain: women make up only 27.7 percent of local representatives, and only 9.5 percent of district administrators in Germany are women. More than 90 percent of town halls are led by men. Elected officials raising families are particularly underrepresented in local politics. The reasons for this are numerous, as are the solutions. The study "With Children in Politics" uses numerous examples, interviews, and profiles to show what structural changes can be initiated in municipalities to make local politics more family-friendly and, consequently, more diverse. It contains concrete steps and recommendations for action for policymakers, administrations, and associations. The study was authored by EAF Berlin and funded by the Federal Ministry for Women as part of the Helene Weber College.

Press release from the Berlin Declaration

The Berlin Declaration, an alliance of 21 leading women's associations and organizations, advocates nationwide for equality as a guiding principle in all policy areas, for parity in leadership positions across all sectors of society, for equal pay and equal conditions in the workplace, and for a life free from violence for all women. We are shocked and appalled by Russia's war of aggression against Ukraine and the associated war crimes, the siege and destruction of cities and civilian facilities such as hospitals and schools, and the atrocities committed by the Russian army against the civilian population, as documented in the suburbs of Kyiv and elsewhere. There is a fear that sexual violence against women will continue to be used systematically in the coming weeks as a further means of breaking the population's resilience.
