Dual Career Expertise

When it comes to the future of Germany as a hub for science, strategies for attracting the best minds in international competition are of central importance. In this context, the topic of dual careers has gained significance in recent years.

In cooperation with the five Hessian universities and the Hessian Ministry of Higher Education, Research, Science and the Arts (HMWK), EAF Berlin produced an expert report on dual career initiatives. The results and recommendations were presented at a symposium in Wiesbaden on October 8, 2010.

In 2009, so-called dual career services for highly qualified scientists were established at three Hessian universities: Darmstadt, Frankfurt, and Marburg. These service centers address the reality that when deciding to relocate for the sake of a scientific career, it is becoming increasingly important whether a partner can also continue their own professional career in the new location.

The recommendations from EAF Berlin on strengthening Hesse as a hub for science and expanding dual career activities were received with interest and discussed by approximately 30 representatives from universities and research institutions at the symposium. The non-university research institutions signaled great interest in future cooperation with the university-based dual career services.
