Event series: "OfficeMeToo – When Sexism Comes to Work"

A talk series with Ferda Ataman, Independent Federal Anti-Discrimination Commissioner

Sexist patterns of thought and behavior shape every area of our daily lives and society. They also manifest in the workplace, impacting interpersonal relationships, well-being, and the opportunities employees have to participate and thrive. Furthermore, sexual harassment and discrimination based on gender are prohibited under the General Act on Equal Treatment (AGG).

Women and queer individuals are particularly often affected by sexism in the workplace. Additionally, people experience discrimination for other reasons that can overlap and intersect with sexism.

Discrimination based on gender—whether through unfair pay or treatment, limited career opportunities, derogatory remarks, or direct harassment by supervisors or colleagues—places an enormous burden on those affected and can lead them to change jobs or leave the workforce entirely.

Sexism also has a negative impact on organizations, institutions, and companies: it damages the working environment, the sense of belonging, and the company's reputation. This can lead to dissatisfaction, high turnover, and economic losses.

Sexism harms everyone: While men are less frequently affected by certain forms of sexist discrimination, rigid gender roles and expectations of "typically masculine" behavior can create unhealthy pressure and disadvantage men who do not conform to traditional gender norms.

Against this backdrop, EAF Berlin—funded by and in cooperation with the Federal Anti-Discrimination Agency—is conducting a series of events aimed at highlighting current challenges and exploring solutions for how we can work together to counter them. Under the title "OfficeMeToo – When Sexism Comes to Work," the one-year project will feature two online events and one in-person event with the Independent Federal Anti-Discrimination Commissioner. These events will examine the topic of "sexism in the workplace" through various focal points, cross-industry perspectives, and intersectional lenses.
