Career with Children
Innovative models for leaders during the family phase.
When couples have children in Germany, it often leads to men increasing their career efforts while women focus on the family—even if both partners had equal career ambitions before the birth of their first child. This is exactly where the "Career with Children" program series comes in. The pilot project was conducted from 2012 to 2014 by EAF Berlin in cooperation with Deutsche Bahn AG and Deutsche Telekom AG, and was funded by the Federal Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs and the European Social Fund. Building on the pilot and the experience gained from it, Deutsche Bahn AG and Deutsche Telekom AG are continuing the program with the support of EAF Berlin. The program is also being implemented in an adapted form in other companies, including BASF AG and VW AG. The goal is to prevent career interruptions around parental leave, to empower those on parental leave—both men and women—and to initiate changes in companies that promote work-life balance.
The program provides impetus for change at both the individual and organizational levels. Through mentoring, networking events, and exchanges with experienced leaders, it prevents those on parental leave from resignedly giving up on their own aspirations.
Training and coaching sessions cover topics such as negotiating with supervisors, assertiveness and self-confidence for parents, self-marketing and networking for parents, conflicts in partnerships, and the implementation of flexible working models.
Parallel to the mentoring, EAF Berlin, in cooperation with the companies' diversity departments, conducted various event formats to drive cultural change: in multiplier workshops, good-practice labs, and networking evenings, HR managers, HR officers, works council members, and top executives within the organization are sensitized, won over to the cause, and provided with practical implementation knowledge.
