Democracy needs women
Promoting women's participation in local politics in Tunisia
Since 2012, EAF Berlin has been active in Tunisia, supporting the country's democratization process through the project "Democracy Needs Women." The project focused on fostering women's political participation, particularly at the local level, through networking, exchange, and dialogue.
The project was guided by three overarching goals:
- Exchange: Promoting the exchange of experience and knowledge between Tunisia and Germany regarding women's political and social participation.
- Empowerment: Supporting, training, and mentoring potential candidates for regional and local elections.
- Networking: Sharing best practices and fostering dialogue among participating NGOs, as well as within regions among local stakeholders from civil society, politics, and administration.
"Democracy Needs Women" was established as part of the Tunisian-German Transformation Partnership and was funded from 2012 to 2014 by the Federal Foreign Office and the Federal Ministry for Family Affairs, Senior Citizens, Women and Youth. From 2015 to 2016, during the third project phase, the project was commissioned by the "Initiative for Municipal Development" of the CoMun program (Municipal Development and Local Democracy in the Maghreb) of the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ), with funding from the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ).
