MAYORESS
Across Europe, only 15 percent of mayors are women. The project aimed to increase the representation of women in local leadership positions and mayoral offices.
Together with experts and practitioners, the project empowered female candidates and mayors, built sustainable networks, and fostered cross-border exchange. Furthermore, recommendations were developed for political stakeholders—such as parties, associations, and legislators—to implement measures and policies at both national and European levels. Another goal was to raise public awareness regarding the need for better gender equality in local leadership.
Mayoress offered three modules:
- Empowerment measures and networking activities for mayoral candidates and mayors
Empowerment measures for female mayors were developed and tested in North Rhine-Westphalia and Schleswig-Holstein; in addition, peer mentoring was offered to female candidates in North Rhine-Westphalia. Partner organizations supported these activities. The development, testing, and evaluation of the planned empowerment measures are transferable to other countries.
- European Mayoress Campus
The European Mayoress Campus specifically promoted personal exchange of ideas and experiences, as well as political cooperation between women in local government across the participating countries, contributing to the creation of sustainable networks.
- Expert Forum
In addition to the partner countries, other carefully selected experts from various European countries and the European Commission participated in a forum. They came from the fields of academia and research, as well as politics and public administration.
