You can't run a country without women! The Polish women's movement and its influence on democracy
What can we learn from the Polish women's movement?
In October 2023, a major shift occurred in Poland: the right-wing conservative PiS government was voted out, and a coalition of democratic forces won the election. In the run-up, there was broad mobilization of the population, in which women in Poland played a particularly central role. This led to a historically unprecedented voter turnout of nearly 74 percent.
What can we learn from the Polish women's movement? The Director of the Heinrich Böll Foundation's Warsaw office and mentor in the "Polmotion" mentoring program Joanna Maria Stolarek will share insights from the experiences of Polish women during the 2023 parliamentary elections. She will also look at developments since the parliamentary elections and—very timely—at the local elections taking place in Poland on April 7, 2024.

The Action Program Municipality – Women into Politics!
The Action Program aims to sustainably increase the proportion of women in local representative bodies (city and municipal councils as well as district councils) and the number of full-time and volunteer female mayors and district administrators. Therefore, it does not only focus on women, but also aims to help initiate structural changes that can have a positive impact on women's participation and the overall acceptance and attractiveness of local politics. A key focus is on rural regions. Over a project period of 1.5 years, two groups of 10 selected regions each will benefit from numerous offerings and a one-time grant of €5,000 for regional activities.
The program is funded by the Federal Ministry for Family Affairs, Senior Citizens, Women and Youth (BMFSFJ) and is implemented by EAF Berlin in cooperation with the German LandFrauen Association (dlv). The three leading municipal associations—the German County Association, the German Association of Towns and Municipalities, and the Association of German Cities—as well as the Federal Working Group of Municipal Women's and Equal Opportunities Offices support the program.
