Women remain significantly underrepresented in politics, with traditional gender roles and stereotypes playing a major part. This forum focuses on how societal norms and expectations complicate women's political involvement and how these barriers can be addressed.

About the event

Traditional gender roles and stereotypes are key reasons for the underrepresentation of women in politics. Female politicians face high, gender-specific expectations: they are expected to be friendly, high-performing, and always "look good." Furthermore, women are often assumed to be interested only in social or family policy, while their competence in other political areas and departments is frequently questioned—meaning female politicians often have to work harder and are not taken as seriously. This expert forum explores how traditional norms, gender stereotypes, and role expectations disadvantage women in politics.

The speakers

Dr. Sandra Schwark, an expert in gender equality, will provide an overview of historical role expectations, their ongoing impact, and the necessary countermeasures.

Journalist, author, and podcaster Sally Lisa Starken will discuss why she believes women and politics are a perfect match and why it is vital for democracy that women in all their diversity are able to take on political responsibility.
