Theater and study presentation

On September 19, 2023, Dr. Helga Lukoschat will present the study "Women POWER Berlin! Political Participation of Women in Berlin." The event will be preceded by a performance of the play "Frau Minister" by Jule Torhorst.

In her play "FRAU MINISTER" Jule Torhorst explores the nature of power, drawing on the biography of her aunt, Dr. Marie Torhorst, Germany's (GDR) first female minister. From communist utopia to contemporary gender debates, she asks: Do women in positions of power do things differently? Did the East produce more emancipated women, and is the West German housewife rising to the challenge? What does a woman need to stay in power? Can we break free from patriarchal styles?

The subsequent presentation of the new study "Women POWER Berlin" demonstrates that equal political participation is still far from being achieved here in the capital! On the contrary, the new analysis of current female representation in Berlin shows that women remain at a significant disadvantage. The study will be presented by its author and EAF Senior Advisor, Dr. Helga Lukoschat.

The 2023 Berlin repeat election reveals with surprising clarity how electoral law and party nomination practices, in particular, either promote or hinder the political participation of women.

Following this, former President of the Bundestag Prof. Dr. Rita Süssmuth and Berlin Senator for Gender Equality Cansel Kiziltepe will join actress Juliane Torhorst, study author Dr. Helga Lukoschat, and moderator Dr. Christine Kurmeyer to discuss the status of women in politics and society, what has been achieved, and what is needed to finally reach equal power.
