Super Election Year 2024: How do we handle the organizational and emotional demands of campaigning?
The upcoming elections are the defining topic of 2024. In addition to the nationwide European elections, local elections will take place in nine federal states in June: Thuringia, Baden-Württemberg, Brandenburg, Hamburg, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Rhineland-Palatinate, Saarland, Saxony, and Saxony-Anhalt. In September, state parliaments will be up for election in Brandenburg, Saxony, and Thuringia. It is a "super election year" accompanied by significant concerns. Governing parties are under intense pressure, and fundamental democratic values and a culture of respectful debate are being threatened in many places by the rise of right-wing extremist and anti-democratic forces.
This event, part of the "HWK Invites" series, focuses on this year's various election campaigns, offering current officeholders and those aspiring to (re)enter politics a space for exchange and mutual support.
Practical examples with two guest speakers
The session will address both the organizational and emotional demands of campaigning through two expert perspectives: Political coach Analena Mahler supports women both in office and on their path to it. Using numerous practical examples, she will outline what needs to be considered in the final stretch of a campaign. Resilience trainer Frauke Puttfarken will focus on the emotional challenges of campaigning and how candidates can develop effective strategies for difficult situations.

The Helene Weber Kolleg
Women in all their diversity are underrepresented in politics, particularly in parliaments and local councils. At the federal, state, and local levels, the proportion of female officeholders is growing at a snail's pace or even declining. Not even one in ten town halls is led by a woman. The goal of the Helene Weber College (HWK) aims to change that: As the first nationwide, cross-party platform for women in local politics, it offers various exchange and networking formats, as well as resources to support women in entering and advancing their political careers. A key focus is placed on an intersectional perspective. Through the Helene Weber Award, the HWK recognizes outstanding local female politicians, giving visibility to them and their work. The Helene Weber Network strengthens and connects the award winners. The HWK is funded by the Federal Ministry for Family Affairs, Senior Citizens, Women and Youth (BMFSFJ) and implemented by EAF Berlin.
