Ten selected regions across Germany are once again participating in the second round of the "Kommune – Frauen in die Politik!" action program. The goal is to sustainably increase the number of women in mayoral offices, district administration offices, and local representative bodies—such as city and municipal councils and district assemblies. Women remain significantly underrepresented in local politics, especially in leadership positions. Only one in ten mayoral offices is held by a woman, and progress is painfully slow. Over the next 18 months, the action program will support these regions with funding and networking activities, a non-partisan and supra-regional mentoring program, consulting services, networking meetings, and public relations work.

Schedule and event information:

The morning session, from 9:30 to 11:00 a.m., features a public segment that is open to all interested parties, including members of the press. The second part of the event is reserved for the participating partner regions for internal exchange and program planning. This digital event will introduce all regions and program modules for the second round.

Program:

  • 9:30 a.m.: Welcome
  • 9:40 a.m.: Opening remarks by the Federal Ministry for Family Affairs, Senior Citizens, Women and Youth

The "Municipality Action Program – Women in Politics"

The action program aims to sustainably increase the proportion of women in local government (city and municipal councils as well as district assemblies) and the number of female mayors and district administrators, both full-time and honorary. Therefore, it does not focus solely on women, but also seeks to initiate structural changes that can have a positive impact on women's participation and the overall acceptance and appeal of local politics. A key focus is on rural regions. Over a project period of 1.5 years, two cohorts of 10 selected regions each will benefit from a wide range of resources and a one-time grant of €5,000 for regional activities.

The program is funded by the Federal Ministry for Family Affairs, Senior Citizens, Women and Youth (BMFSFJ) and is implemented by EAF Berlin in cooperation with the German Rural Women's Association (dlv). The three leading municipal associations – the German County Association, the German Association of Towns and Municipalities, and the Association of German Cities – as well as the Federal Association of Municipal Women's and Equal Opportunities Offices, provide their support.
