Helene Weber Prize

The Helene Weber Prize—named after one of the four mothers of the Basic Law—was an award presented by the Federal Ministry for Family Affairs and Women to recognize outstanding achievements by women in local politics. It was aimed at women who had served in honorary local political roles for one to a maximum of two legislative terms. The prize was established to mark the 60th anniversary of the Basic Law and has been ceremoniously awarded by the incumbent Federal Minister for Family Affairs on five occasions: 2009, 2011, 2015, 2020, and 2024. EAF Berlin was responsible for the call for entries, the organization of the award, and the support of the award winners. Recipients received individual coaching as well as support for local initiatives.

The right to nominate candidates lay with members of the German Bundestag, and a high-profile jury made the final selection. The network of award winners grew to 65 women, representing all parts of Germany, different generations, and various political parties. This self-organized network was represented by an elected spokesperson and formed an important part of the Helene Weber College. Many of the winners, for example, served as mentors themselves to encourage more women to get involved in local politics.
