Sexism in (local) politics

The digital symposium on January 27, 2026, focusing on sexism in (local) politics as part of the Frauen.Vielfalt.Politik. project, will examine experiences, countermeasures, and approaches for change.

Sexist remarks, derogatory comments about appearance or clothing, and unequal opportunities: sexism as gender-based discrimination remains an everyday reality in politics. Women and queer individuals are particularly affected.

About the event

What mechanisms define the phenomenon of sexism? Which strategies help in dealing with it? And what structural changes are needed to ensure equal political participation for everyone?

In addition to a presentation by Prof. Dr. Clarissa Rudolph from OTH Regensburg on the mechanisms, strategies, and necessary structural measures against sexism in politics, local politician Julia Klewin will share her personal experiences with sexism in local government. She will offer recommendations on how to respond to sexist comments or incidents and discuss the measures she believes are necessary to combat sexism within political parties, local committees, and municipal administrations. Furthermore, the Alliance Against Sexism will present its resources for local stakeholders.
